A new exhibit in Denver pairs art, wine and music

by: Amy Norton/YourHub.com

Artist Annette Coleman invites you to experience her artwork in a whole new way at her current exhibit at the Garfield Estates Winery Tasting Room, 4640 Pecos St., Denver in Colorado’s Winery Row. –Photo provided by: Annette Coleman

The exhibit, Showing now through Oct. 6 features Annettes artwork paired with music and wine, allowing visitors to involve themselves in the work on a whole new level.  The show is open to the public during business hours 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and on Third Friday Aug. 19 for Winery Rows Uncorked event.

As the founder of 8888ArtLook, a new service, that allows artists to add audio recordings to their exhibits, Annette wanted to take advantage of showing her work in a wine focused setting.  Each piece has a show tag with a phone number—viewers call the number and key in the Art Number to listen to an explanation of one of the Garfield Estates wines as well as of the piece of art they are viewing. Instrumentals by the band Pick Pocket Ensemble play in the background of the recording. It creates a very interactive learning experience for the viewer as they engage a variety of senses.

A sample recording can be heard by dialing 888-827-8566, when prompted enter the Art Number 0001, when prompted enter the Look Number 82.

As a multi-media artist, Annette Coleman, mines the fragments of her nightly dreams to create layered works of art. Using old woodcuts and linocuts, as well as drawn images, Annette has created artwork that evokes the mystery of these dreams. Bringing seemingly disparate archetypes and symbols together with wax and pigments, she creates richly imagined landscapes of the unconscious.

Garfield Estates is focused on producing the finest wines from estate grown Colorado grapes. Their Denver Tasting Room is located in Colorado Winery Row, Denver's new urban wine tasting destination that provides a unique opportunity to taste boutique wines with proprietors and winemakers of 5 participating wineries. Their Fridays Uncorked events occurs on the third Friday of each month and offers local wines, food and music in a block party atmosphere. For more information visit www.coloradowineryrow.com.

A new twist on audio art tours
by: Matthew Rodriguez/YourHub.com

Rich Neumann, left, of Delaware, and Shannon May, center, of Virginia, use the new 888-8ArtLook service to listen to an artist’s synopsis of her work at Niza Knoll Gallery in Denver. The service allows patrons to hear recordings from different artists. “It’s like the artist is here with me,” said May.

Santa Fe galleries use cellphone service for exhibit, artist info
A mobile phone service inspired by museum audio tours is being used by some local artists and galleries to help patrons engage with their displays.

The company, 888-8ArtLook, allows patrons to hear recordings of artists discussing their works while they browse through galleries or after they go home.

Founder Annette Coleman, of Boulder, said the notion that art speaks for itself is a myth that her service helps demystify.

"You have to talk about your work," Coleman said. "You have to engage people in what it is you do."

Audio tours have long been a staple of museums, Coleman said, but they have been too costly for many galleries. She said museum audio tours are often narrated by curators whereas her service allows patrons to hear from artists directly.

"Contemporary artists can speak for themselves," Coleman said. "To me, that's exciting."

The toll-free service is being used for an exhibit of mosaics at the Niza Knoll Gallery on Santa Fe Drive. The exhibit, featuring the works of more than a dozen artists, is called "Mosaics: Facets and Fragments" and runs through Saturday.

"People like it," Niza Knoll said. "They do. And a lot of them will take it home. You can dial it from home and still get the information."

A flier at the gallery gives instructions on how to use the service anytime. Dialing from home is one way to get around poor phone service in some parts of galleries.

Gallery owner Knoll said 888-8ArtLook provides a direct connection between customers and artists, whose works are on display.

"It'll have more information than I'll sometimes have," she said.

Artist Sue Crosby Doyle is using the service for a show that runs through Dec. 19 at Core New Art Space on Santa Fe Drive.

Some artists introduce themselves, describe the stories behind their works or give their class schedules. Others go right into flowing, poetic descriptions of their pieces.

"Each artist has a way of talking about their work a little bit differently," Coleman said.

Coleman said an artist usually has to make about seven contacts with customers before they decide to make a purchase. Some of those are through the mail, e-mail and word-of-mouth. She said she hopes 888-8ArtLook can be one of those steps in the process.

While Coleman is starting the service in Colorado, she has signed up a California artist and plans to expand there and in New Mexico.

The Artwork Network gallery and event center on Santa Fe Drive used the service for a photography exhibit a few months ago.

"It seemed like a good tool," owner Alan Kircher said. "People were definitely intrigued by it. ... Artists always need additional marketing tools, and this is a great one."

Launch in Denver
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  November 6, 2010

New service takes “Museum Audio Tour” concept out into the galleries.
888-8ArtLook Connects Artists to Patrons

(Denver)  A new service for artists and art enthusiasts launches this month in Denver.  The service, called 888-8ArtLook allows art enthusiasts to hear live audio descriptions of artwork they are viewing at any location, much like an audio tour at a museum. A simple cell phone call to the number listed on a show tag provides a recorded message from the artist describing a show in general, or specifics about a certain piece.

The public is invited to a launch party on Third Friday November 19th, 2010 from 5-8 pm at Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe Drive.  Attendees will be able to learn more by participating in a live demonstration of the service, and may enter a drawing to win a free year of service from ArtLook. This reception and demonstration is in conjunction with the exhibit “Mosaics: Facets and Fragments”, organized by the group Colorado Mosaic Artists.

For artists the ArtLook service provides a channel for direct communication to their patrons that would be otherwise difficult to achieve on a consistent basis. It allows art viewers to utilize their cell phones as a way to connect to, and gain a deeper understanding of the process, inspiration or story behind a work of art directly from the artist.

The service can be used by individual artists, galleries, organizations, and for special exhibitions and tours. Individual artists can choose a membership for $19.95 per year for a one time general promotional message. Or, they may choose a more comprehensive membership that allows for multi-stop exhibition recordings.  These popular membership levels start at $7.95 per month. Separate pricing applies for Gallery and other types of membership.

The business is the brainchild of Annette Coleman, Artist and Entrepreneur, who saw the need for a new way to market artists and connect to patrons without relying on traditional media outlets. It was a natural fit to use a common new technology - cell phones - to be able to bring the “museum headset” concept out into galleries.  The service was tested during the Boulder Open Studios tour and received very positive feedback from artists and users of the system.

An additional benefit of the service is that the system tracks the number of phone calls received so artists can get real statistics as to the popularity of their exhibit or of certain works.

888-8ArtLook is the name of the business as well as the phone number to call to connect to art happenings in your area or learn more about exhibits. The business name does have 11 numbers rather than 10 -- the “K” or final number can be dialed or left off.  For those who may have a cell phone that does not have a traditional keypad (and thus cannot match up letters to numbers) the phone number to access the system is 888-827-8566.
